Upside Down House Museum: When Your World Literally Turns Around

Falling in love. Getting hitched to the man or woman of your dreams. Having a baby. Raising a toddler. Beating deadlines. Dealing with stress. These are some of the instances in life that many people admit could turn their world around. Of course, it's just figurative.

But what if you really find yourself in a place where everything's turned upside down? What if it's your house? How would you feel?

That strange feeling of being in awe and being helpless at the same time I recently experienced during our visit to the new Upside Down House Museum. Helpless because everything's on the ceiling (except for the two areas where the furniture and accessories are on the walls) and we can't be  like Spiderman who can easily climb any part of a room.

Davaoeños Dominate Asia's Got Talent Finals

Musical talent is overflowing in the Davao region. The latest proof of this is the presence of Davaoeños in the grand finals of Asia's Got Talent who showed their skills in beatbox and dancing. Kudos to Neil Llanes for placing 3rd and DMX Comvalenoz who got the 2nd spot. From the start, they have captivated the hearts of the judges and the audience and it's no surprise why they've made it to the finals.

Neil Llanes first competed in Asia's Got Talent in 2015 when he was 19 years old and still a college student. That time, he was already among the top competitors but since his studies came first, he had to cut short his participation. Although being in AGT was a dream come true for him and an opportunity to help his family financially, he decided to stop to take his final exams in school.

Blissful Glam: The Newest Nail Spa Destination in the City

It used to be that women and men simply go to the salon (or beauty parlor) to have their nails done. Today, however, teens and adults can enjoy relaxing nail services at a specialty beauty salon now known as nail salon or nail spa salon. This establishment normally offers manicures, pedicures, nail enhancements and even hand and foot massages among many other services.

One of the newest nail spa destinations in the metro recently opened at Abreeza Mall. A local business, Blissful Glam Nail Spa Salon located at the third floor of Abreeza's corporate building is owned by a young couple committed to provide customers with top quality services using only the safest products.

Budget-Friendly Asian-Brand Shops Worth Visiting This Holiday Season

Have you started shopping for Christmas gifts? If not or if you still need to buy more presents, there are several new budget-friendly shops in the city that you should visit. They are Asian-brand shops located at the malls and offer a wide variety of items at very affordable prices. I've been to these places that's why I highly recommend them.

Do remember that when giving gifts this Christmas season, it's really the thought that counts and not the prices of the items you bought. So plan your shopping well so you won't go over your budget.

Chef Boy Logro and His Dynamite Lumpia

I've always loved to cook since I was a kid. I started with baking cookies (together with my older brother) then cakes and then eventually, different kinds of dishes. Back in the day, I would always love to prepare my favorite dishes during special occasions.

When I got married and became a mother, I became fascinated with cooking shows, both local and international. That was when I decided to work at home which gave me an opportunity to watch these shows including the various popular cooking battles. I got to learn about the famous chefs here and abroad which encouraged me to try cooking new dishes that don't take much time.

Lazada Affiliates in Davao All Set for the 3-Day Online Revolution

It's that month of the year again when Lazada holds its biggest sale called "online revolution" and I'm one of those excited for this major event. Who wouldn't be with all those huge discounts on a wide variety of items awaiting shoppers?

As a wise-spender and budget hunter, I always go for events like this. I started shopping online last year all because of Lazada and I have no regrets. In fact, I must admit I've become addicted to this huge marketplace on the web. I've signed up as an affiliate as well.

Here in Davao, the number of Lazada affiliates has grown and among them are bloggers and digital influencers. The Lazada Affiliate Marketing team led by Sydney Dondon gathered them last Saturday at Pinnacle Hotel for the yearly Online Revolution roadshow. We gained new information on the biggest sale event and affiliate program. Also, we each got our Box of Joy as an early Christmas present (yay!!) and celebrated Affiliate Marketing head Sydney's birthday.

Freestyle Band Makes Homecoming Performance

When it comes to music, it cannot be denied that Davao City has produced quite a number of talents (both individuals and groups) that have made it to the national and international scene. The Freestyle Band is just one of them.

Born in Davao City in 1996, the band has created many hit songs well-loved by music fans from the generations X and Y to even the millennials. From doing gigs in the local scene, the group eventually moved to Manila in 1998 where it gained huge success recording albums, doing concerts and corporate shows and earning music awards.

Back here in Davao, Freestyle had its first gigs in various venues. They performed at the former Pag-Asa Bar of Apo View Hotel, The Venue (across Central Bank) and in corporate shows. Thanks to brothers Bolichie and Tat Suzara for this first-hand information.

National Pampering Day: Time to Treat Myself to a Relaxing Massage

Relaxed and rejuvenated. That's how I and my feet felt after enjoying a soothing massage last October 17 during the National Pampering Day. Thanks to Nailaholics Nail Salon and Spa for organizing this most loved national pampering event that provided free services to women and men.

It was supposed to be my "me time" but since there was no class due to the second day of the national transport strike, I had to bring my tween daughter along. My appointment was at 12:30 pm and I was there early. I had to wait for a few minutes, though, as the Nailaholics Salon and Spa in SM Lanang was jampacked at that time.

Davao Chocolate Festival Highlights Region's Cacao Produce

"Life is a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." ~ Forrest Gump

Who doesn't love chocolates? Whether it's the milky sweet, dark, plain or with nuts or fruits, a chocolate bar can surely satisfy one's sweet craving. Lucky for us here in Davao as we get to taste world-class chocolates of all kinds and I'm not talking about the imported ones but those produced locally.

Yes here in Davao, local chocolate products are growing in popularity and are making a name in the international market. In fact, Davao's chocolates such as those of Malagos Garden Resort are now renowned as world-class owing to the international awards they have won in recent competitions.

To honor Davao's chocolates and cacao growers, a yearly Davao Chocolate Festival has been organized since 2013 in partnership with the Cacao Industry Development Association of Mindanao Inc. (CIDAMI). Hosted by SM City Davao, the event puts the spotlight on the region's booming cacao produce, the growers, processors and cafe owners. The just-concluded 2017 festival took place last week at the Annex Event Center of SM City.

#NationalPamperingDay supports World Vision, PAWS and Save Philippine Seas

I'm excited to be part of this year's National Pampering Day by Nailaholics  Nail Salon and Spa. I got my ticket yesterday and I'm ready for my foot spa tomorrow. Yay!!

This will be the second time that I'm going to be availing of the services of  Nailaholics. Being a working mom, I deserve some pampering once in a while and this trip to the nail salon and spa would be a great opportunity as well to enjoy some "me time." What makes this special is I'm going to be taking part in a worthy endeavor that will not only provide free pampering services to women and men but will also support cause-oriented organizations.

How Davaoeños Said #YesToJollibeeBurgerSteak

I'm sure you would agree that it's easy to say "yes" to food especially if it's being offered by a Filipino brand that everybody loves at no cost at all. And I'm talking about what else? The ever popular Jollibee.

Just last week, the Jollibee Burger Steak truck arrived here in the durian capital to allow Davaoeños to experience the 100% beefy-linamnam, saucy-sarap Jollibee Burger Steak free of charge.  And as expected, the Davao leg of  the Jollibee Burger Steak sampling tour was a hit among young professionals.

Jollibee’s Say #YestoJollibeeBurgerSteak nationwide sampling tour in Davao took place on September 27 in two locations - at the Abreeza Corporate Center from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and at the Damosa IT Park in Lanang from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Hundreds of free burger steak meals were served hot in these locations.

Nailaholics Nail Salon and Spa Gears Up for 2nd #NationalPamperingDay

When it comes to pampering on a national scale, Nailaholics Nail Salon and Spa holds the only spot. After introducing the National Pampering Day last year, Nailaholics is back at it again this 2017 with an amplified nationwide celebration of relaxation that everyone is looking forward to. This will happen next week, specifically on October 17

The National Pampering Day got off to a good start last year with Nailaholics offering free manicure service and a stress relieving hand massage from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in all their branches nationwide. This year, everyone will be treated to a free service of their choice - a soothing manicure, calming foot spa or a relaxing foot massage.

“We Filipinos are very hardworking in any given aspect of our lives and a nation of energetic and industrious people best deserves real pampering once in a while. This year, as Nailaholics celebrates the 2nd National Pampering Day, we go deeper and dedicate this to everyone and remind them to take it slow, take it easy, zone out and relax for a while.” said Arvin Amaro, Marketing Head of Nailaholics Nail Salon and Spa.

Easy Saving Tips for Moms and Soon-To-Be-Moms

Moms juggle so many tasks every day not only in the home but even in their office (particularly for those who are employed or run their own business). Managing funds is one important task they have to do. And this is not simply holding on to money but more importantly, keeping track of the family's income and expenses and saving for the rainy days.

Not all moms, though, have the skills (and the patience I must say) to properly manage their budget. Some do well at the start but eventually give up along the way when they become too pre-occupied with a lot of things.

So what's the best way to be consistent in this aspect? What should mothers do to ensure that they don't run short of funds and are able to lead the lifestyle they want moving forward? Here are some of my personal tips.

Expo Mom Davao Now On Its 4th Year

One national event dedicated to moms that has been doing the rounds of major cities in the country is Expo Mom. Organized by Mommy Mundo, this yearly #TeamMom activity began in 2007 in Metro Manila and has since gone on a nationwide roadshow in other parts of the Philippines including Davao City. The Expo Mom Davao is now celebrating its fourth year.

I was fortunate to have attended the recent Expo Mom Davao with fellow blogger Olivia Cena-Limos. The Davao leg was held at Abreeza Mall and showcased lots of creative, kid-friendly and eco-friendly products. A program was also held featuring Dabawenya moms who shared about their personal experiences and friendships with other moms, a radio DJ and Dad from Manila who talked about fatherhood, a school administrator who revealed a unique education concept and kids who performed dance numbers. There were also workshops and games involving parents and their children.

Our Lady of Compassion Sculpture: A New Memorial at Roxas Avenue

While strolling  Roxas Avenue during the Kadayawan weekend last month with my daughter, I spotted this huge sculpture after Ateneo de Davao University. It was that of a woman with long hair and with a smaller "Pieta" figure in the bottom part. The giant sculpture can easily grab attention and I presumed that time we passed by the area that it was related to the bombing incident that occurred in the Roxas night market a year ago.

As there was no signage there about the sculpture, I searched the internet for some info. I was right all along that the figure was created in relation to the unfortunate event that happened in Roxas Avenue on September 2, 2016 that claimed the lives of 15 people and injured 67 more.

Kadayawan Village: A Spectacle of Tribal Homes

One of the most memorable things I did during the recent Kadayawan Festival was to visit the Tribal Village at Magsaysay Park. The mini village created for the event was a spectacle of the tribal homes of Davao's 11 indigenous tribes.

My trip there was made more memorable by the presence of my two kids who went with me. I showed them around and somehow, we three got the chance to brush up on our Philippine history lessons particularly on the Mindanao tribes.

Davao, by the way, is home to 11 indigenous tribes. They are the Ata, Sama, Tagabawa, Ovu-Manuvo, Klata-Guiangan, Matigsalog, Kalagan, Maguindanaoan, Tausug, Iranun and Maranao.

Sharing here some photos of the tribal homes I took during our visit at the Kadayawan Cultural Village.

Tips for Choosing the Right Car for Your Family

Sponsored post. Owning a car is a necessity today particularly for families. With a dependable car, parents can easily bring their kids to school and their preferred destinations during weekends and holidays. For this reason, it is extremely important to find the right car that fits your family's lifestyle.

With so many brands and models of cars available these days, it can be quite a challenge to find one that will meet your family's needs. Thankfully, there's a wealth of information on the internet that can help you achieve your goal. Websites dedicated to vehicles such as Cars.com are great online resources to turn to. They provide reviews of various types of automotive including their specifications, unique features and prices.

A Close Encounter With Davao's Indigenous Tribes

The Kadayawan sa Davao is one festival that most Dabawenyos look forward to, myself included (although I'm not really a full-fledged Dabawenya just a self-proclaimed adopted one). There are many reasons to be excited about this mother of festivals and these include the various events lined up by the city government and its partners every year.

This year, I made sure to visit the Kadayawan Village at Magsaysay Park. What made my trip there more exciting was the presence of my two children whom I brought along last Wednesday. From the entrance, the festive mood at the cultural village  was already felt. There was a long line of people, young and old, wanting to get inside and see up close the tribal houses of Davao's 11 indigenous tribes and the tribesmen as well.

Kia Motors Davao Unveils The New and Bigger Picanto

Being a progressive metropolis, Davao City is often among the first to witness the launch of major products and services and these include the latest automobiles.

Kia Motors Davao recently unveiled the all-new and bigger Picanto at the Lanang showroom. The launch was done simultaneously in five key areas including Metro Manila, Cavite, Pampanga, Cebu and Davao City. Gracing the event was Mr. Tobi Ang, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Angcore Motor Company, who expressed pride and joy in unveiling the bigger and bolder Picanto. Also there to witness the launch were Columbian Autocar Corporation sales director Chut Velasquez and Kia Motors Davao sales manager Irene Pitao. The Angcore Motor Company is a Davao-based firm and the major dealer of Kia, Chevrolet and Mahindra vehicles in the city and neighboring municipalities.

Mom's Day Out: A Breather for Davao Moms & Mommy Bloggers

It is always a welcome respite to spend time with like-minded people especially moms like me amidst our busy schedule. Thankfully, such respite happened last Saturday afternoon at Radisson Park Inn Hotel during "Mom's Day Out" organized by Sun Life Financial Philippines.

That afternoon was filled with moments of relaxation (thanks to the free back massage courtesy of Elysia Wellness Spa), laughter (thanks to our bubbly family life and financial management speakers) and learning about motherhood and preparing for a child's education. There were a lot of giggles and nods as the attendees got to relate to what the speakers were sharing.

Pino Tropika: Loving This Davao-Made Soap Enriched with Vitamins

With numerous brands of beauty soap now available on the market, it pays to choose wisely. One should not compromise quality over price.

In my younger years, I was not very particular about the soap I used. With no allergies to worry about, whatever was available in the house was fine with me. But not anymore as I need to protect my skin these days from harmful chemicals and the sun. As much as possible, I want soaps that have a mild scent and contain natural ingredients. In short, I go for the organics.

I recently found the right soap I can rely on and I know this is going to be for the long term. Its name is Pino Tropika and it's proudly made in Davao City. A product of My Skin Origins, it contains various fruit and plant extracts that are sure to nourish the skin.

Davao is All Set for Kadayawan 2017

It's less than a month to go before the Kadayawan festivities and Davao City is so ready to host and welcome guests for this yearly grand event. Kadayawan 2017 was officially launched early this month by no less than Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio with great pride and optimism.

This year, the theme for the most-awaited Kadayawan Festival is "Stand Tall, United, Resilient" which aptly describes Davao City and its people. Amid the threats and recent unfortunate incidents, the city's residents remain united and courageous to face life while being vigilant of their surroundings.

The Kadayawan 2017 will kick off on August 14 and will run until August 20. Magsaysay Park will be the venue of the festival's opening ceremony. Here's a quick peek of the upcoming events for Kadayawan 2017 (courtesy of the Kadawayan sa Davao Facebook page).

Going Loco Over Taco

The mere mention of the word 'TACO' lights me up. I've been a fan of this Mexican food for a very long time now and I still fancy them. Whether it's the crispy or the soft type, I crave for them from time to time. I also like making them at home but I must admit I get a different high when I buy those at the mall or at my favorite restaurant.

At the mall, my favorite go-to place for my taco fix is Taco Boy. As for the restaurant, my fave is none other than Taco Loco (which is, luckily, just near my place). This resto located at Damosa Market Basket in Lanang serves authentic Mexican food and they just had their second grand opening last July 1st.

Best Places to Enjoy the Butterflies

Butterflies are beautiful creatures and the sight of them often makes many people smile (me included). Here in Davao City, there are two places where locals and visitors can go to to enjoy them. One is the Butterfly House in Ma-a and the other is the Museo Mariposa in Malagos, Calinan.

I have been to these places years ago with my family and I'm glad to know that they have been further developed through the years.

Butterfly House

The Butterfly House is located at River Front Drive in Ma-a before the Crocodile Park. It features not only butterflies but also plants and flowers, a fruit nursery as well as some exotic animals.

Philippine Eagle Week Marks 19th Year

I've been to the Philippine Eagle Center in Baguio District, Davao City twice already (the last was in 2011) and every visit always leaves me in awe of the majestic national bird. Indeed, Davao City and Mindanao in general are very fortunate to be the home of this Philippine eagle.

I took this photo of Dakila during my second visit to the Philippine Eagle Center in 2011.
Thankfully, the Philippine eagle (scientific name: Pithecophaga jefferyi) has been declared as a national bird. This was done through Proclamation No. 615, series of 1995 signed by then President Fidel Ramos.

Where to Dine if You Want a Vintage Setting

Davao City today boasts of numerous modern and chic restaurants and cafes featuring unique interior designs. Many of the newer ones are what they call "Instagram-worthy" places. Some also offer specific international cuisines ranging from the Japanese, Chinese, Indian and Vietnamese to the Australian, Swiss and French.

However if you're the type of person who loves a vintage setting with a romantic and cozy ambiance (and I mean dining places housed in well-preserved heritage buildings), there are several worth visiting. Be prepared with your budget, though, as these places are fine dining restaurants with prices of meals and drinks a bit higher than the ones you are accustomed to.

Claude's Le Cafe de Ville

This French restaurant is located along Rizal Street (downtown area just a short walk from San Pedro Cathedral) in the former Oboza House. Built in 1929, this heritage house has been well preserved with most parts retained including the veranda which displays several memorabilia of the Obozas (original owners of the house). French chef Claude Le Neindre is the owner of the restaurant.

Mary Kay Treats Davao Bloggers to a Make-up Session

Mary Kay, the well-known American cosmetic company, is now celebrating its 17 years of presence here in the Philippines. To mark this occasion and the birthday of its founder, Mary Kay Philippines executives recently treated Davao bloggers and local media to a fun make-up and skin care session and a healthy lunch at the cozy Sea Green Cafe.

I joined the DBS Glam Squad in the fun and enriching make-up class during which we were all made to try Mary Kay's products from cleansing and toning our face to moisturizing and applying make-up. Gian Riaz, Mary Kay Product Manager, taught us the right way to apply cream and liquid products to the face using the ring finger and using circular motions. He also demonstrated how to do the eyebrow and eyeshadow on Davao Blogger Society member Athina Angliongto.

Mother's Day Tribute: How I Make Time for Nanay

"It's all coming back, it's all coming back to me now," so goes Celine Dion's song.

Memories of my childhood and growing up years flashed back  recently that kept me thinking how strong my Nanay had been in raising all four of us. Now that I'm a mother myself raising teens, it makes me realize the difficult times my Nanay had encountered back then with four of us to attend to. I only have two kids and she has four yet there were times in the past that I felt I was carrying a burden so heavy. But thanks to her unwavering support and unconditional love, I was able to hurdle those trying times.

It's a blessing to have my Nanay around to still help us in our needs even when we already have our own families. She continues to inspire me with her strength and grace and I hope to follow her footsteps.

Kublai Art Garden: A Garden Like No Other in Kapatagan

Most of us are attracted to beautifully-designed gardens filled with colorful flowers and a wide variety of plants. There are plenty of them here in the city being home to the famous waling-waling and other rare orchid varieties.

But there's also one garden in Kapatagan (Digos, Davao del Sur) that showcases not flowers or plants but art works. And they're not just the small size or medium size ones but giant-size art creations, specifically sculptures.

I'm referring to the Kublai Art Garden of well-known Mindanaoan artist Kublai Millan. It's the first of its kind  in Mindanao and perhaps, the only one in the Philippines. Sharing here the snapshots I took of his awesome artworks during our recent trip to Kapatagan.

Honda Motors Launches First Flagship Shop in Mindanao

Investor confidence in Davao City remains high. Proof of this is the opening of new business establishments and the upgrading of existing ones around the metro. One of the latest to do so is the Honda Flagship Shop in Buhangin, the first in Davao City and the entire Mindanao.

Last Friday, Honda Philippines Inc. (HPI) in partnership with DESMARK Corporation officially opened the largest Honda motorcycle retail concept shop in the city. Special guests during the grand opening of the Honda Flagship Shop were HPI President Daiki Mihara and the Du family of Desmark Corp. among others.

Davao Guide App: A Very Helpful Tool for Travelers in the City

Davao City offers so many interesting places where people can dine, shop, enjoy entertainment and nature with family and friends. But for visitors, it can be quite a challenge to get the right information and find the place they want to go to.

The good news is that going around Davao City today should be easier, all thanks to this new Davao Guide App. Launched last March in time for the 80th Araw ng Dabaw, this mobile app does not only provide a list of establishments and their locations but also important information for tourists visiting the metropolis. Developed by Cebu-based company InnoPub Media, this very useful tool is supported by the Davao City Government and Smart Communications.

LEGO Opens First Store in Davao City

LEGO brings a lot of happy childhood memories to many people who grew up with it and it continues to bring joy to kids of today. Thankfully, those in Davao City and nearby provinces who wish to buy Lego toys need not go to Manila anymore or purchase online. This is because Davao now has its own Certified Lego Store in Abreeza Mall which means even the adults who want to make their childhood dreams come true can very well do so now.

It was last week, Earth Day or April 22 to be exact when Lego and its partners including UNICEF formally opened its 7th certified store in the Philippines and 1st in Davao in the presence of guests, the local media and bloggers. The fun event dubbed "Davawsome Adventure" started with a short program followed by a game for moms and kids and the grand opening of the store.

Lego announced its partnership with UNICEF Philippines to build the first National Centre for Children with Disabilities in Philippine General Hospital (PGH). At the same time, the store through Sharlene Ortiga (LAJ Philippines retail manager) turned over a check worth P500,000 to UNICEF Philippines representative Lotta Sylwander as part of its fundraising drive to raise P10 million for the centre's construction.

Kapatagan Mt. Apo: Dream Destination Finally Reached!

In the first few years of my life here in Davao City, I've already heard about Kapatagan in Digos, Davao del Sur. I've learned about its beautiful location and scenery through the features I've read in the local newspaper. That got me curious but I never had the chance to go there until recently. The long wait (yes almost 20 long years) is finally over.

Not many people are aware that Kapatagan is actually a barangay of Digos in Davao del Sur. It is located on a higher elevation at the foot of Mt. Apo the reason for the cold weather there. The place is also a main producer of Davao's vegetables (sayote, carrots, potatoes, eggplants, cabbage, squash among many others) and one of the two trails used in climbing the Philippines' highest peak (Kidapawan is the other trail).

We went on our road trip to Kapatagan a day after my daughter's grade school graduation and my hubby's birthday which took place last April 1st. I've long been waiting for this adventure to happen and when it was finally time to go, I couldn't contain my excitement.

Satisfy Your Sushi Cravings at Wasabi Warriors

Ask anybody who loves Japanese food what they prefer and surely, sushi will be among the list of their favorites. Sushi today comes in different varieties and sizes and offered by many Japanese restaurants in the city.

But if you're craving for sushi while strolling at the mall, you can head to Wasabi Warriors located at the 2nd floor of Abreeza Mall's Corporate Building. It's a perfect place to have your snacks or meal  before or after shopping or after a movie date, perhaps.

What makes their sushis stand out is they're made from fresh local produce. This means they tap local farmers to supply their ingredients thereby ensuring fresh sushi every day. Interestingly, their sushis are perfectly mixed and formed thanks to the robots they are using.

Make Your Summer The Best Ever

As a kid, I've always looked forward to summer for several reasons. Apart from the fact that school is over, summer means family vacations to places in Luzon and Visayas. Some of the best summer memories I had were in Lubao Pampanga (my Tatay's hometown), Baguio City, Manila and not to forget, Boracay.

Summer holidays when I was much younger would mean a lot of sun exposure without sunscreen whether at the beach or just in the neighborhood biking or flying kites. So you could just imagine the sunburn I experienced back then. But times have changed and with global warming in our midst, it's a must now to be sun-proof.

Thankfully, there are lots of products available these days that can help protect ourselves from head to foot. The sunscreen, for example, now comes in lotion, gel and spray (with before and after sun exposure variants) and there's also sunblock for the face, lip balm for dry lips and even hair and scalp shield. And where's the best place to get all these? Watsons is the right shop to turn to for your summer personal care needs.

Davao Food Appreciation Tour 2017: Food, Fun & Friends

I've  been living here in Davao City for almost two decades now but I must admit that I haven't tasted all of the famous food here nor visited as many popular restaurants in the metro. I've heard about this Davao Food Appreciation Tour years ago and I thought the participants were so lucky to be able to visit different dining places and taste their specialties in a span of several days.

Well this year, guess what? I finally joined the Davao Food Appreciation Tour (DFAT) 2017 last week and the experience was unforgettable. NCCC Mall Marks 80th Araw ng Dabaw with Himig at Saya Show

When  Araw ng Dabaw comes, you can expect major malls in the city to have shows featuring young and popular celebrities. This gives Dabawenyos, especially the movie fans, a great opportunity to see their idols in the flesh. Thanks to these wide screens installed in the activity centers of malls, fans who may not be able to sit near the stage can still view their most admired celebrities very clearly.

The NCCC Mall had its own show during the 80th Araw ng Dabaw week dubbed "Himig at Saya" and I was glad to be invited. It was an afternoon show that featured local talents and teen celebrities of ABS-CBN such as Girl Trends Maris and Barbie (who were also former PBB housemates), Hashtag Paolo and teen heartthrob Joshua Garcia who's being touted as the next John Lloyd owing to his good looks and acting skills.

1st Food Truck Festival in Davao a Huge Success

I've always been fascinated with food trucks. In fact, it's my dream business (if only I have the funds) because I love cooking and making people happy with the food I make.

My fascination with these food-serving trucks grew more when Lifestyle Network aired this series entitled "Eat Street" which features all kinds of food trucks in the U.S. offering delicious and affordable dishes cooked in minutes. There's also "Food Truck Faceoff" on the Food Network that featured two teams that need to present a unique concept for a food truck business with the best team bringing home its own food truck, what else.

And so I got really excited when I heard that the 1st Food Truck  Festival in Mindanao was going to be held in the city as part of the Araw ng Dabaw celebration. I thought it would be great to see trucks selling food in one venue just like in the U.S. and in Manila.

Getting Ready for Summer? Get Your Hair Ready Too!

So you're ready to hit the beach and spend a lot of time outdoors this summer. But wait! Are you taking good care of your hair?

Keep in mind that too much sun exposure can make your hair dry, weak and brittle and can cause split ends. As such, you need to use the right products that nourish your hair and don your hats or caps whenever you go out especially when the sun is up.

While it's true that a trip to the salon can fix your hair problems, you still need to take care of your hair on a daily basis and eat the right foods. Your daily efforts will ensure that your crowning glory stays healthy and you don't suffer from hair loss.

Coca-Cola Pays Tribute to Women Micro-Retailers

Managing a sari-sari store at home is no easy task. It entails patience, lots of energy as you need to stay awake for long hours (with no siesta in between more often than not) and math skills. I should know because I have two sisters-in law (one here in Davao and another in GenSan) who own a sari-sari store and I've seen how busy their life is as they're always on their toes every day of the week.

Here in Davao, most sari-sari stores are managed by women and I admire them for their efforts to help augment their family income through this small business. Coca-Coca recognizes these enterprising women as well the reason why it recently gathered thousands of these women owners of sari-sari stores and eateries from Davao and Tagum cities for a day of fun, entertainment and learning at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) gym. It was the first of its kind held in the city and carried this year's theme for women's month "We make change work for women."

A dance performance by a local dance group.
Dubbed as "Coca-cola Sari-Saring Happiness Day," the event was organized by Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc. together with TESDA, City Government of Davao, Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), Tagum City Council of Women (TCCWI) and was also aimed at recognizing the important contribution of these micro-retailers in the national economy.

How to Stay Healthy Now That It's Summer

Summer is here and we're all excited to go outdoors, hit the beach and do fun activities with family and friends. But before you go out and stay under the sun, make sure to keep yourself healthy every day. Otherwise, your wish to have a memorable summer will not be fulfilled.

The weather these days is no longer what it used to be hence, even during summertime we experience rains and thunderstorms every now and then. And this sudden change in weather can definitely affect our immune system which could lead to sickness.

Our best defense is taking vitamins every day. Vitamin C is perfect as it not only protects our immune system but it also has beauty benefits.

S&R New York Style Pizza Opens GMall Branch

I've always been curious about the "American size" kind of pizza that my Nanay and friends who've been to the U.S. usually say. Thankfully, I don't have to go to the U.S. now to experience this. It's all because of S&R New York Style Pizza.

This popular brand of pizza indeed offers a huge serving of one slice of pizza and their whole pizza measures 16" in diameter (no smaller sizes available). Davaoenos can enjoy it in three locations - S&R main in Maa, another branch in Abreeza Mall and the latest in Gaisano Mall or GMall.

The S&R New York Style Pizza GMall was the latest to open. Owned by the lovely Cherry Maning, an entrepreneur (CEO & President of GCF Corporation) and host of a local ABS-CBN show, the new branch is at the second floor of the mall. It officially opened last Friday (Feb. 24) with me and the Davao Blogger Society (DBS) members in attendance. Also there to grace the occasion was S&R Membership Shopping President Anthony Sy.

Where to Find Little Baguio in Davao

If you're after a chilly weather, there are various places in Davao where you can enjoy it. Just head to the mountains or at least in areas with a higher elevation. You can find them mostly in the south such as Eden Nature Park and Dona Loleng's in Bayabas Toril, Calinan, Marilog district, and BuDa (Bukidnon-Davao).

The BuDa area is situated 4,000 feet above sea level hence, the cold weather there which can reach up to 20 degrees Celsius. It is the reason why many people refer to the place as "Little Baguio." You know when you're there when you see the pine trees along the road.
Some of the tallest pine trees I've seen (situated just along the highway).

Global Online Payment Service Payoneer Launched in Davao

Davao City is home to numerous call centers and the number continues to grow. These BPO companies are helping boost the local economy and providing more jobs to Davaoenos not only in the city but as well as from nearby towns. Atty. Sam Matunog, president of ICT-Davao said there are an estimated 7,000 online workers in Davao City at the moment and they are aiming to double this figure up to 15,000 by the year 2020.

As more people are opting to work online these days, the need for online payment services has also become crucial. Fortunately, local and global companies now have various choices depending on the convenience and accessibility they want.

One major player that is providing a great service to online workers and global e-commerce companies worldwide is Payoneer. It is a global payment service that charges lower transaction fees compared to its more popular competitor.

Why I Love Davao City

There are just so many reasons to love Davao City! Whether it's personal, business or professional, one can definitely find a good reason to like the place and consider it home.

International Recognition

Davao City hogged the limelight in the previous years owing to its positive achievements and its people's warmth. It's one of the "World's Friendliest Countries" according to HSBC's 2011 Expat Explorer Survey capturing the 8th spot. Thanks to the warm smiles and hospitality of locals that greet domestic and foreign tourists of all ages who come to visit all year round.

Business-wise, Davao City is among the fastest growing cities. It's in the 87th place of the World's Top 100 Fastest Growing Cities and Urban Areas. The ranking was made by the City Mayors Foundation, a research group based in London.

More than a decade ago in 2000, Davao City was also named by Asiaweek Magazine as the most livable city in the Philippines and among the Top 40 cities in Asia grabbing the 17th place.

One NCCC. This is the new tagline of the LTS Retail Specialists Inc., the new mother company of several NCCC-affiliated brands merged together as one late last year. These brands are the NCCC Supermarket, Choice Mart, HB1, Bread Factory, CitiFoods and Munchies.

Save Money by Using Groupon Coupons

This is a sponsored post and the views I share here are mine alone.

I've always been a frugal person as far as I can remember way back when I was a kid. I was not born with a silver spoon the reason why I learned about the value of money early on.

Since my elementary grades until my college life, I've learned to live with the meager allowance provided to us and never complained. Even if I already had a job then, I would still think twice before buying any personal item. Now that I'm a mother, I'm a wise-spender who would always stop and think before making a buying decision particularly when it concerns personal items or household stuff.

Thankfully despite the rising prices of commodities these days, consumers can still enjoy discounts every now and then. Malls and specialty shops offer huge discounts on certain occasions and I'm one person who often buys during these bargain times when prices are reduced to a much lower level from 20 percent to sometimes as much as 70 percent.
