Moms juggle so many tasks every day not only in the home but even in their office (particularly for those who are employed or run their own business). Managing funds is one important task they have to do. And this is not simply holding on to money but more importantly, keeping track of the family's income and expenses and saving for the rainy days.
Not all moms, though, have the skills (and the patience I must say) to properly manage their budget. Some do well at the start but eventually give up along the way when they become too pre-occupied with a lot of things.
So what's the best way to be consistent in this aspect? What should mothers do to ensure that they don't run short of funds and are able to lead the lifestyle they want moving forward? Here are some of my personal tips.
Keep a notebook for tracking expenses. Having a notebook where you can list down your expenses for the day is very helpful. It will help you monitor where your money goes and what's left of your budget. You can also keep your receipts as reference.
Open a savings account. Having a joint savings account is a good idea. This way, you have a place to deposit a certain amount each month such as what's left of your budget. The savings you accumulate here can be used for emergencies and even for your future family vacations.
In addition to your joint account, you can also open a savings account for your kids. You can start with a kiddie account for each child and make sure to deposit a certain amount each month or every two months, whichever you prefer.
Spend wisely. Moms know how fast money can pass through their hands and when you're not able to manage it well, you could end up with zero balance even before the month ends. It is therefore a must to spend your budget wisely. When grocery shopping, for instance, you can check out the shelves where promo packages are displayed and choose what you need there. Those with freebies such as the 3 plus 1 or 5 plus 1 type are real savers.
As for clothing and accessories as well as household items including appliances, shop during the sale promos of major malls. Malls and department stores nowadays regularly have sale campaigns so take advantage of them.
Get a job or an extra job. Mothers who feel they need to help augment the family income can choose to work part-time or perhaps, start a small business at home or online. Those who have grown-up children already can work full-time if they wish. Having your own income can give a rewarding feeling as you are contributing to the family's budget. A double-income household means more savings.
These are just some of my tried and tested money-saving tips but there other ways you can do to ensure you stick to your budget and don't overspend.
